Do LED Mirrors Really Save You Money in the Long Run?
Of all the reasons to potentially buy an LED mirror for your bathroom, the opportunity it supposedly presents to save money might be one of the key motivations for you.
Why do we use that word “supposedly”? Well, with energy bills still a major concern for UK households, we can understand why you will want to be convinced of the wisdom of your investment, if you do decide to buy an LED mirror.
In particular, you may be concerned as to whether the higher initial cost of a LED mirror for your bathroom will be “paid for” later.
Below, then, the Light Mirrors team has outlined the longer-term value that LED bathroom mirrors can deliver, compared to more “traditional” options.
The Cost Breakdown: LED Illuminated Mirrors Vs Traditional Mirrors
Let’s take you through each category of spending that you will need to think about when you are considering LED bathroom mirrors alongside traditional mirrors:
- Upfront Cost
Yes, it is true that an LED lighted bathroom mirror will almost certainly have a higher initial purchase price than a standard mirror.
However, the exact initial price of a LED mirror for your bathroom will depend on the mirror’s size, brand, and features such as demisters, Bluetooth, and/or adjustable colour temperature.
- Energy Consumption
This is the respect in which LED bathroom mirrors typically drag ahead of alternative solutions in terms of the ongoing savings they can deliver.
LED lighting is noted for its extremely high energy efficiency. In fact, LED bulbs use as much as 80% less electricity than halogen bulbs to produce the same light.
So, if you were to buy a non-illuminated mirror and invest in separate, non-LED bulbs to light it, you can expect the costs of that illumination to run to much more over the course of a year.
That’s presuming you can find those non-LED bulbs in the first place. Here in the UK, most standard incandescent and halogen bulbs have been phased out by Government bans in recent years.
So, trying to find some leftover, pre-ban stock of these older bulbs simply isn’t a futureproof option, compared to investing in a brand new LED mirror for your bathroom instead.
- Longevity And Replacement Costs
The integrated LEDs in a light-up bathroom mirror have an extremely long lifespan. Such bulbs are often rated for 20,000 to 50,000 hours.
This means that even with regular daily use, you can expect the LEDs in your mirror to last for more than a decade. The costs to replace your bathroom mirror lights will be close to zero.
Traditional incandescent and halogen bulbs are much shorter in their lifespan. As a result, you will need to replace these bulbs much more often – again, presuming you can still find any.
- Installation Costs
You might have heard that a hardwired LED bathroom mirror may need to be installed professionally by an electrician. If so, this would potentially add to the costs associated with buying a new LED mirror for your bathroom.
The good news is that our own LED bathroom mirrors here at Light Mirrors come with user-friendly installation guides – and our customer support team is available to help if needed.
However, while it is often possible to do the physical mounting of an LED bathroom mirror yourself, you should always hire a qualified electrician for the wiring. This applies particularly strongly for hardwired models.
